In this blog I am going to discuss some verbal analysis of the poem /song /film song lyric/ hymns/ devotional songs or any poetic expression in any language keep in mind the kinds of misunderstanding discussed in the essay' Figurative Language'.
Ivor Armstrong Richards was a British poet and scholar. He was the pioneer in the domain of New Criticism. He was an English educator.
His works are:
1. The Meaning of Meaning – 1923
2. The Principles of Literary Criticism – 1924
3. The Practical Criticism – 1929.
He mainly talks about four kinds of misunderstanding:
1.Misunderstanding of the sense of poetry: Careless, Intuitive reading
2.Over-Literal reading: prosaic reading
3.Defective scholarship; inappropriate metaphor
4. Difference in meaning of words in poetry and prose (personification, Metaphors, etc.....)
Here I have done verbal analysis of the poem
દફ્તરને ગુસ્સો આવ્યો
દફ્તરને ગુસ્સો આવ્યો, એ કોઠીમાં સંતાયું,
વીસ વરસ પહેલાંનું દફ્તર સપનામાં કેમ આવ્યું ?
સંતાકૂકડી, ખોખો, લંગડી પાડે છે પોકાર,
શેરી-ગલીઓ-મેદાનો પર કેવો અત્યાચાર ?
પગલાંઓને બદલે શાને રુંધે છે સુનકાર ?
ભાર વિનાનું ભણતર કે ભણતર વિનાનો ભાર ?
ટીવી ને કમ્પ્યૂટર નીચે પગપણું કચડાયું…
દફ્તરને ગુસ્સો આવ્યો, એ કોઠીમાં સંતાયું.
દફ્તરની અંદરથી સઘળાં સપનાંઓ છે ગુમ,
ટાઇમ-ટેબલ તો રહી ગયું પણ ટાઇમ થયો છે ગુમ;
દફ્તરમાં ઠાંસી છે ચોપડીઓની લૂમેલૂમ,
થોડી જગ્યા માંડ બચી ત્યાં ટ્યુશન પાડે બૂમ.
સ્કૂલ અને ટ્યુશનની વચ્ચે દફ્તર કેમ પિસાયું?
દફ્તરને ગુસ્સો આવ્યો, એ કોઠીમાં સંતાયું

Misunderstanding :-
When we read this poem during that time it increases the question in our mind that What this poem is talking about and also our mind thinks what message this poem gives us. Most of the time We never think connection of outside world. When I read the first line of this poem , I think that it is misunderstanding and also difficult to easily understand. We can see that poet say , 'dafterne gusso avyo, a kothima santayu' I never imagined about this scene because I think that How can possible anger of the mansion. What connection between anger and mansion.
When I read Word by word this poem does not get proper meaning in the poem. So this poem is very problematic to read word by word. Another thing is that poet used effective and figurative language such as, pokar, santakukadi, kho, time table, chopadi ni loomeloom, tution pade boom etc. Maybe, Poet used all this word connected with study and childhood. but I can't say this is a proper interpretation of poem. I have said that i automatically put in difficulty to understand the concept of poem.
