Othello is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare in 1603. The play is set in Venice and Cyprus and follows the story of a Moorish general, Othello, who falls in love with and marries Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian senator. However, their marriage is not accepted by everyone, particularly by Iago, Othello's ensign, who is jealous of Cassio, a lieutenant who was promoted over him.

Iago manipulates Othello into believing that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. He plants seeds of doubt and suspicion in Othello's mind, using his own wife, Emilia, to steal a handkerchief that Othello had given to Desdemona. Iago then uses the handkerchief as "proof" of Desdemona's infidelity.

Consumed by jealousy and rage, Othello becomes increasingly irrational and abusive towards Desdemona. He eventually smothers her to death in their bed. After realizing the truth, Othello kills himself in remorse.
